Do Entrance Examinations Offer Equal Opportunities to All?

Of all the pathways to enter state universities, the SBMPTN written exam appears to be the fairest path because of its meritocratic nature. The SBMPTN pathway only relies on scores from standardized exams, so that it appears to offer equal opportunities for all prospective students, regardless of school origin or how deep their parents' pockets are.  With that, acceptance by the SBMPTN pathway is seen as a validation of students' abilities and willingness to try. In fact, the "ability" as measured by written entrance exams cannot be separated from the background of the participants, especially their socio-economic background. Cases in other countries support a link between socioeconomic background and success on written entrance examinations. The College Board data shows that SAT scores increase with income1. In USA, Caner & Okten (2013) found that 86% of participants from the poorest 37% of Turkey's population failed OSS, 20% higher than participants from the richest 10%2. For South Korea, Kim, et al. (2014) found that decreasing decile rankings in the socioeconomic status and educational environment indices (which take into account parents' overall income) resulted in a decrease in the standard nine scores. The CSAT is 0.06 and 0.433, respectively. These cases represent how family income plays a role in boosting the prospects of participants in the entrance examination.
